In 2003-2004 the ATF implemented a strategy openly before the public and with the approval of Congress and the Mexican government. This would be a sting operation to see if they could track the movements of drug cartels and kingpins by allowing a small number of guns — 250 or 300 at the most — to be carried across the border to the cartels. Obama’s Fast and Furious scheme sent 2500 – 3000 guns across the border in comparison. That program was called Project Gunrunner. But before seeing the program through to the end, the Bush administration ended Gunrunner because, according to officials, the early stages of the program did not net the successes that officials were looking for.
In 2009, however, with the election of Barack Obama, a new component was added into the mix that brought new interest to the now defunct Gunrunner program. Obama was a strong proponent of gun control, although he conveniently avoided making it a campaign issue. His reason was given in an interview. He stated that even if he pushed his supporters to introduce such a bill in Congress, it would not get the votes to pass, not even in his own Party. Yet some Democrats were every bit as anti-gun as Obama, including Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, and others. If they could somehow resurrect Gunrunner, vastly expand it, and add to it the gun issue in order to “prove” that most of the guns used by Mexican criminals come from the United States, then they could kill two birds with one stone. Publicly they could show they were going after drug kingpins. Privately they could undercut the gun rights of American citizens. They could call for “reasonable restrictions” on guns by using bogus figures supplied by the Fast and Furious operation.

Whether or not the Assad government knew about the strikes beforehand, it stands to benefit, note Helene Cooper and Eric Schmitt at The New York Times. Since the anti-ISIS, anti-Assad rebels the U.S. favors aren’t in any position to capitalize on the airstrikes, Assad’s forces are “in perhaps the best position to take advantage of any American bombardment,” reclaiming ground lost to ISIS. “We don’t plan to make it easy for Assad to reclaim territory,” a White House official told The Times, without explaining what methods the U.S. might employ to deter the Syrian army

Democratic leaders ran for cover Monday from legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to vote in New York and become eligible for health and other benefits now reserved for citizens. The measure — which also would allow undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses and even run for office — was introduced earlier this year by state Sen. Gustavo Rivera D-Bronx and Assemblyman Karim Camara D-Brooklyn.For some Dem incumbents, the issue was too sensitive to even discuss.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo declined requests for comment. But his Republican opponent, Rob Astorino, pounced.

Illegal aliens in New York could score billions in Medicaid and college tuition money — along with driver’s licenses, voting rights and even the ability to run for office — if Democrats win control of the state Senate in November, The Post has learned.
A little-known bill, dubbed “New York is Home,” would offer the most sweeping amnesty available anywhere in the country to nearly 3 million noncitizens living in the Empire State. It would bar police from releasing any information about them to the feds, unless it involves a criminal warrant unrelated to their immigration status.
Under the proposed legislation, undocumented immigrants could also apply for professional licenses and serve on juries.
The plan hinges on Democrats — who now control both the governorship and the state Assembly — wresting control of the Senate from Republicans, who oppose immigration amnesty.
Bronx Sen. Gustavo Rivera, who is sponsoring the legislation in the upper chamber, said he thinks the bill would be in position to be passed “if we have a stable Democratic majority in the Senate.”

In the early 1960s, America’s top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.
Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.
The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba’s then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.

President Barack Obama would seek to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad if American planes were attacked upon entering Syrian air space, Peter Baker of The New York Times reports.
If Assad’s troops fired at American planes entering Syrian airspace, “Obama said he would order American forces to wipe out Syria’s air defense system,” Baker reports. “He went on to say that such an action by Mr. Assad would lead to his overthrow, according to one account.”

President Obama hoped to repeal the Bush-era authorization declaring war on al Qaeda—instead he’s expanded it without bound.
Future historians will ask why George W. Bush sought and received express congressional authorization for his wars against al Qaeda and Iraq and his successor did not. They will puzzle over how Barack Obama the prudent war-powers constitutionalist transformed into a matchless war-powers unilateralist. And they will wonder why he claimed to “welcome congressional support” for his new military initiative against the Islamic State but did not insist on it in order to ensure clear political and legal legitimacy for the tough battle that promised to consume his last two years in office and define his presidency.
President Barack Obama is interviewed by NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press.”
At least one prominent fact-checking organization is calling out President Barack Obama for falsely claiming he “wasn’t specifically referring to” Islamic State militants when he dismissed them as a “JV” team.
During a Sunday interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Obama was pressed on the comments, published in a January profile in The New Yorker. In the piece, Obama was asked about the jihadist militants that had just captured Fallujah, Iraq. He replied: “The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant.”
… “Keep in mind I wasn’t specifically referring to ISIL. I’ve said that, regionally, there were a whole series of organizations that were focused primarily locally,” Obama said, according to an NBC transcript. “And I was very specific at that time. What I said was, not every regional terrorist organization is automatically a threat to us that would call for a major offensive.”
But Politifact, a leading fact-checking organization, subsequently rated Obama’s recollection as “false.” Politifact even reached out to the author of the New Yorker piece to confirm the specific context of Obama’s quote: the capture of Fallujah just days before.”
At the time, Islamic State often referred to as by its acronyms ISIS or ISIL was not a household name. It was often referred to as an Al Qaeda-linked group in press reports. But reports from the time clearly indicate that the group was responsible for taking over the city,” Politifact reported. “We rate the statement False.”

WASHINGTON AP – The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday.
The IRS said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings.
On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe, including two agents who worked in a Cincinnati office processing applications for tax-exempt status.
