So what are the odds that former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden can win it? Two Norwegian politicians who penned his nomination tell The Guardian Snowden deserves it because his whistleblowing “contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order” by revealing a massive American surveillance apparatus that has peeped into the records of world leaders and peons alike
Politicians Baard Vegar Solhjell and Snorre Valen—both in Norway’s Socialist Left Party—called Snowden’s act a “critical contribution” to peace and stability. Professor Stefan Svallfors, who tried to nominate Snowden last year but missed the deadline, also said the award would help rectify a past wrong:
The decision to award the 2013 prize to Edward Snowden would—in addition to being well justified in itself—also help to save the Nobel Peace Prize from the disrepute that incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision to award U.S. President Barack Obama 2009 award.
