Mohammed Morsi refuses to quit as Egypt army deadline looms – ABC News

Egyptian president Mohammad Morsi says he would rather die than bow to a looming army deadline for him to quit. Just two years after a similar display of people power forced out a dictator, protesters are demanding the resignation of the Islamist leader.
… A defiant Mr Morsi yesterday insisted he is the legitimate leader and said he would rather die than stand down – a sentiment that has been echoed by presidency spokesman Ayman Ali tonight.
“It is better for a president, who would otherwise be returning Egypt to the days of dictatorship, from which God and he will of the people has saved us, to die standing like a tree,” Mr Ali said. “Rather than be condemned by history and future generations for throwing away the hopes of Egyptians for establishing a democratic life.”
The true sign of democracy? A leader who would rather die than step down? That’s what happens when all we preach is “democracy” to people, instead of what we should be preaching a “republic”, which is what the United States is “supposed” to be.
